Titanic, The Unsinkable
The RMS Titanic was a British luxury passenger liner known for its huge tragedy. While declared unsinkable, this proved untrue after striking an iceberg (1912). The events resulted in (estimated) 1,500 deaths, largely made up of crewmen and third-class passengers.
The two data sets show two major themes: The power of high status in society (Data 1- Total deaths by class) and ignorance due to superficial standards (Data 2- Safety resources, lifeboats on the Titanic). The visualizations and data represent this connection.
The lifeboats on the ship were reduced from the ship’s capacity of 64 boats to 20 lifeboats. This was simply for aesthetic reasons and overestimation of the ship’s ability. The 1997 film references how this was used to impress the wealthy patrons. Furthermore, the film shows priority given to first-class passengers for lifeboats. These emphasize the link between my two data sets.
